Police Arrest Man Impersonating ‘Obi of Lagos’, Foil N1.5bn Palace Unveiling
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly presenting himself as the “Obi of Lagos”.
According to police authorities, Azubike, who hails from Obodoukwu in Ideato North LGA of Imo state, was arrested alongside three others: Chibuzor Ani, 57; Martins Nwaodika, 65; and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41. The arrests took place on Saturday.
In a statement issued by Babaseyi Oluseyi, deputy spokesperson of the command, the suspects were accused of planning to unveil a prototype of a N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on September 13 in Amuwo Odofin.
Acting on intelligence, security operatives sealed off the venue to prevent the event from holding. Police said the move was aimed at ensuring public safety and stopping residents from being misled.
“As part of this preventive action, the command deployed adequate manpower, including conventional police operatives, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical units to the premises earmarked for the ceremony,” Oluseyi said.
“Their presence was to guarantee that the event did not take place and to ensure public order was not compromised,” he added.
The suspects are currently being held at the command headquarters in Ikeja. Police said they would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Olohundare Jimoh, Lagos commissioner of police, warned residents to be wary of impostors exploiting cultural institutions. He described such acts as unlawful and capable of disturbing the peace.
“The command will continue to enforce the law firmly and decisively against any individual or group engaging in acts that undermine legality, public order, and the integrity of the state,” Jimoh said.
