No region can win presidency alone, alliances are key – Ex-APC secretary

Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Waziri Bulama, has said that no single region in Nigeria can win the presidency without building alliances with others.

Bulama made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television.

He explained that Nigeria’s diversity makes cooperation between regions essential for democratic stability.

Bulama was responding to a remark credited to Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who had said that no politician could win the presidency without the North and that the region would soon decide where its votes would go.

In reply, Bulama argued that no region could produce a president on its own.

“Neither would a northerner win an election without the support of other parts of the country,” he said, stressing that alliances across regions remain essential in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic democracy.

He explained that despite Late Muhammadu Buhari being a well-known figure with about 12 million consistent votes across three elections, he could not win until he formed alliances with other regions.

“So it was an ideological movement that connected with citizens across the country, not just in the North but all over,” he said.

He explained that when people join a political party, they are expected to set aside local identities such as tribe, region, or religion and instead embrace the collective values and goals of the party.
