Nigeria vs Gabon: Idah Peterside Criticizes South African Match Officials

Former Nigerian international Idah Peterside has voiced worries regarding the appointment of South African referees for the crucial World Cup playoff clash between Nigeria and Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.

FIFA announced that Tom Abongile will officiate the match, assisted by fellow South Africans Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima in VAR duties.

Peterside highlighted that the appointments could prove risky, given recent comments from South Africa’s sports minister expressing a desire to see Nigeria fail in their World Cup qualification bid.

“Picking referees from a country whose sports leadership openly stated they do not want Nigeria to qualify raises concerns,” he told Sports247. He stressed that impartiality in officiating is paramount, particularly in high-stakes matches like the intercontinental playoff.

Despite the potential controversy, Peterside urged the Super Eagles to focus on what they can control on the pitch.

“Nigeria’s players must remain focused, disciplined, and execute their game plan regardless of who is officiating,” he added. He pointed out that mental strength and concentration will be critical in navigating the playoff environment, especially at a neutral venue like Morocco.

The former international also emphasized that the team’s attacking and defensive cohesion will be decisive in overcoming Gabon, regardless of external factors.

Peterside concluded by calling on fans to maintain confidence in the squad and trust that the players can handle the pressure of the playoff, even if questions about refereeing linger.

“The referees are part of the game, but the outcome will ultimately depend on Nigeria’s performance,” he said. “Our team must rise to the occasion and secure qualification through focus, discipline, and execution.”
