Eyewitnesses Describe Harrowing Scene as Lagos Building Catches Fire

According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, September 18, 2025, the vibrant commercial epicenter of Lagos Island was transformed into a scene of devastation and tragedy this Tuesday, as two separate and severe fire incidents erupted in close succession, resulting in a profound loss of human life and the near-total annihilation of property valued in the hundreds of millions of naira.

The catastrophic events have not only paralyzed the city’s primary business district but have also triggered a massive, multi-agency emergency response and sparked urgent conversations regarding urban infrastructure safety and emergency preparedness in one of Africa’s most densely populated metropolises.

The first and most lethal conflagration ignited without warning at the prestigious Afriland Tower on Marina, a modern high-rise that serves as the corporate headquarters for numerous organizations, including significant offices of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and a major branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA). The fire, which is believed to have originated in the building’s lower levels near a transformer area, rapidly generated an immense, suffocating plume of thick black smoke that ascended through the structure, trapping a significant number of employees inside their offices.

The situation escalated into a scene of sheer desperation as occupants sought any means of escape. A bystander described the terrifying measures some were forced to take, stating, “Some people even jumped down from the building, though soft foams were thrown on the ground for them to land on.”

This grim testimony underscores the life-or-death decisions faced by those trapped. While valiant efforts were made by passersby and initial responders who used makeshift ladders to assist in the rescue, the formal arrival of fire services, though timely by some accounts, faced challenges in immediately containing the situation.
