EPL: Gary Lineker pinpoints major reason Arsenal might not win title
Former England attacker, Gary Lineker, has said that Arsenal cannot win the Premier League without goals from their main striker, Viktor Gyokeres.
He said the Sweden international needs to ‘start scoring’ if Mikel Arteta’s side are going to ‘realise their ambitions’ of winning the Premier League.
Arsenal finished as runners-up in the last three seasons but are currently sitting three points clear at the top of the table.
The Gunners beat Fulham 1-0 at home Saturday.
Manchester City in second place beat Brentford 2-0 while Liverpool lost to Manchester United to drop to fourth.
Arsenal are now the bookmakers’ favourites to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
However, Lineker believes a successful title bid may be reliant on an upturn in form in Gyokeres.
Gyokeres moved to Arsenal for a fee of £64m from Sporting CP where he scored 97 goals in 102 matches.
“Viktor Gyokeres is going through a bit of a bad spell,” ex-England striker Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“It’s seven games in all competitions without a goal now [for Arsenal].
“I think for Arsenal to really realise their ambitions, he’s going to have to start scoring a lot of goals. I think it’s a big spell coming up for him over the next few games.”
