BREAKING: Police Detain Self-Proclaimed ‘Obi of Lagos’ for Alleged Unauthorized Installation

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man who proclaimed himself the “Obi of Lagos,” alongside three alleged accomplices, over what authorities described as an unlawful installation attempt.
Police identified the principal suspect as Engr. Chibuike Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North LGA of Imo State. He was arrested with Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). All four are currently being held at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
According to a statement issued Thursday by the Command’s deputy spokesperson, Babaseyi Oluseyi, the suspects had finalized plans to unveil a ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.
However, police operatives stormed and sealed off the venue to prevent what they described as a breach of public peace.
“Acting on credible intelligence, the police promptly shut down the venue to forestall disorder and protect unsuspecting members of the public from being deceived,” Oluseyi said.
He added that investigations into the suspects’ “nefarious activities” are ongoing, and the outcome will be made public before they are formally charged in court.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh cautioned Lagos residents to be wary of impostors seeking to exploit Nigeria’s revered traditional institutions for selfish gain.
Describing the act as unlawful and a potential threat to public peace, Jimoh stressed that the Command would act decisively against anyone undermining the state’s cultural integrity and the rule of law.
“The Command will continue to enforce the law firmly and decisively against individuals or groups engaging in acts that threaten legality, public order, and the integrity of Lagos State,” he warned.
