Benue PDP loses only Rep Member to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Benue State has lost its only member in the House of Representatives, Pastor Ojotu Ojema, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojema, who represents Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and serves as Chairman of the House Committee on National Inland Waterways, announced his defection on Thursday, October 9, 2025, during a meeting with Apa/Agatu PDP executives in Obagaji, Agatu Local Government Area.
He said his decision to quit the PDP followed extensive consultations with his family, associates, and constituents, citing deep-seated internal crises within the party from the national to the grassroots levels.
“The PDP has been engulfed in internal wrangling that has made it difficult for the party to function cohesively. I cannot remain in a system that stifles progress and unity,” Ojema declared.
The lawmaker emphasized that his move to the ruling APC was guided by divine direction and a commitment to bring greater development and democratic dividends to his people.
“God’s instruction to me is to make people happy. My achievements in two years are visible across Apa and Agatu. I will do more if in the ruling party,” he added.
Ojema, who expressed gratitude to PDP members for their long-standing support, assured that his exit from the party would not affect his cordial relationship across political divides.
Several PDP leaders, including the former Agatu Legislative Leader, Hon. Ochokwu Alelu; Agatu LGA PDP Chairman, Hon. Sunday Oteyi; Acting Apa LGA PDP Chairman, Hon. Oki Saleh; and Mrs. Alima Matthew, praised Ojema’s performance and described him as a unifying and development-oriented leader. They urged supporters to stand by him regardless of party affiliation.
Also speaking, Hon. Prince Antenyi, the legislator’s aide, commended Ojema for his outstanding representation, saying he had provided livelihoods for thousands of constituents.
“Inasmuch as the people of Apa love him and wish him to remain in the PDP, they will not go against God’s decision,” Antenyi said, adding that Ojema’s defection would attract greater opportunities to the constituency.
He further called on Agatu residents to join their Apa counterparts in supporting Ojema’s move to the APC, describing it as “a great omen for everyone.”
