FCT PDP chieftain Abraham Ajiya dumps party for APC, cites injustice, lack of internal democracy

A prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Abraham Stephen Ajiya, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing unresolved internal crises and a lack of political direction within the opposition party.
Ajiya, who was a candidate in the contentious North Central Vice-Chairmanship election, announced his resignation from the PDP during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
He said the move followed extensive consultations and a desire to find a platform that would allow him to better serve the people of the FCT.
“Many may ask reasons for the decision, but you and I know that my journey with the PDP as a party platform has not been cordial and promising for a young and upcoming politician like me,” he explained.
Recounting his ordeal, Ajiya accused PDP leaders of manipulating the Jos zonal election process and pressuring him to step aside for what he described as “a less qualified candidate.” His refusal, he said, led to marginalisation and prompted him to seek legal redress, which yielded no meaningful results.
“The election turned into a mere formality predetermined by party leadership. The appeal panel sat immediately after the election and delivered a verdict the same day without my knowledge. This is unheard of,” he lamented.
According to Ajiya, his decision to leave the PDP was a necessary step to safeguard his political career. “After due consultation, it became imperative to seek a new ground to further my political career,” he said, adding that he sees the APC as a better platform to achieve his vision for the FCT.
