Former Nigerian international and Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke has explained why Spanish giants Barcelona are unlikely to pursue in-form Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy.
Guirassy, currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, has emerged as one of Europe’s top strikers and is the leading scorer in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
While acknowledging Guirassy’s top form, Amuneke noted that Barcelona’s current strategy prioritizes youth development and long-term planning over signing established stars.
“Guirassy is a proven goalscorer who can play for any top team in Europe,” Amuneke said in an interview with Africfoot.
“Don’t get me wrong—he’s been consistent over the last two or three seasons, and if it were up to me, I’d consider signing him. I admire his qualities.”
“But he’s 29 years old, and Barcelona is focused on building for the future.”
Amuneke noted that the Catalan club has shifted its recruitment strategy, now relying more on their famed La Masia academy rather than spending heavily on ready-made stars.
“Barcelona no longer throws huge sums at big names. Guirassy’s price tag—likely upwards of €60 million—makes the deal even more unlikely.”
He added that while Guirassy is certainly good enough to play at the highest level, he may not fit Barcelona’s current project.
“Would he replace Lewandowski? That’s a tough ask. Lewandowski is one of the greatest strikers the game has seen. Guirassy is excellent, but not the ideal fit for what Barcelona is trying to build—they want to dominate world football again for years to come,” Amuneke concluded.
